Installing A Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller In A 2000 Dodge Ram Van

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/18/2024

Question:

2000 ram van 15 passenger 5.9l gas. installing aftermarket 7-pin plug and Tekonsha brake-evn controller. can not locate any plug that resembles pictures online, near e-brake, on or above steering column, or near brake booster under hood. all hooked up , less the red wire from controller to a pedal force wire. is it on the brake switch , that says do not replace? Did not come with any tow package that I am aware of, but would think Dodge has a generic wiring harness under dash .

Hey Jon,

It doesn't look like there's a plug-in connector for the Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller # TK63VR in your 2000 Dodge Ram Van so you would need to use a universal wire harness # 7894 and splice it into the factory wiring in the following manner:

Black - 12v power with inline circuit breaker # 9506P
White - Ground
Blue - Brake output pin on 7-way
Red - Cold side of the brake light switch

To find the cold side of the brake light switch you'll need to probe # PTW2993 into each wire coming off the brake pedal to see which one only has power when the brake pedal is depressed. You can also just install a stop light switch kit # RM-751000 and connect the output from it to the red wire from the brake controller wire harness to bypass the brae light switch.

Hey Jon, how did things go finding the cold side of the brake light switch for your Ram Van when wiring the Tekonsha controller? Your update could make it easier for others working on similar setups without a factory tow package.
