Troubleshooting No Brake Output From A Hopkins Impulse Brake Controller

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/09/2024

Question:

My brake controller recognizes the trailer is plugged in, brakes work good in manual mode pushing red button when ouch the pedal. The trailer brakes don’t work and there’s no gain output from the controller. 2002 sierra. Hopkins impulse brake controller.

Hey Clark,

When you're testing the brake controller with the brake pedal is your Sierra moving or are you sitting and pressing the brake pedal? Brake controllers will require the vehicle to be moving (usually about 20-25mph) in order for them to activate. Using the manual override lever/switch would be the only way to activate it otherwise.

If the truck is moving and you're not getting any output and you hardwired your controller in then you could've potentially spliced into the wrong wire for the brake light switch. If you have a plug-in wire harness then it could be as simple as a blown or missing fuse for the brake controller port.

Let me know what you have and if the vehicle's been moving when you've tested the brakes and we can keep troubleshooting until we resolve the problem.

Hey Clark, what ended up happening when you tested the Hopkins Impulse brake controller with your Sierra moving? Once you had a chance to check that, did the trailer brakes start responding as expected? Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same issue.
