Can we leave the tester plugged in at all times when we are going down the road.

Yes, you can leave the tester, # 20115, plugged in while traveling. It is not going to fall out, especially when you are towing a trailer since it would be sandwiched in between the vehicle side connector and the trailer connector.
But you might find that leaving it in place is not the best idea because you are essentially adding another link in the connection between the trailer and the vehicle.
