So happy to hear the DT54YR fits the 2023 BMW X1. Do I really need to trim the heat shield?

Yes, trimming of the heat shield on your 2023 BMW X1 is required to install the Hidden Hitch by Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # DT54YR. I have linked the installation instructions which shows you the section of the heat shield which must be trimmed. This is required so that the section which holds the removable receiver can be accessed.
