Trailer Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

The dealer advises me that since the 2013 models, only a Dodge provided trailer brake controller will work for the truck at a dealer cost of $230 + installation. The truck has a pre-wired trailer harness/plug. He advised that use of another brake controller can foul up electronics affecting other functions such as air conditioning controls. You offer controllers and associated harnesses by CURT. Have any of these been installed on 2014 models and, if so, are there harmful results to other electrical control circuits?

Dodge introduced a multiplex type of wiring called Powernet starting in 2013. Traditional brake controller harnesses would not work with it. So manufacturers developed a new harness that will work with the Powernet. The dealer may not know of the aftermarket options and the new wiring harnesses developed for use with the Powernet system. But you can very much install an aftermarket one if you want to.

If you like Curt brake controller # C51130 then for a 2014 Ram 1500 you will need harness # C51453. This harness plugs into 2 places on the vehicle which is required for the controller to work with the Powernet system.

I have linked the instructions for the harness and included a link that talks about the Powernet system. The article covers the 2013 but the Powernet system is also being used on the 2014s.

We have installed controllers on the 2013 models with no issues. I have included a link to a video showing a typical brake controller installation.
