Hi, can a Skybox 18 fit on the dodge durango 3rd gen with the factory stowable rack system? I read it only has a 25inch span.

I did some research on your 2012 Dodge Durango with the stowable rack system installed. Per the owners manual the maximum weight capacity of the system is 150 lbs. That would include the weight of any roof top cargo carrier along with the enclosed cargo. You will want to check with your dealership or your owners manual to make certain you do not exceed the roof weight capacity of your Durango.
I was unable to find the crossbar spread in the owners manual, I did find some online conversations where customers said the crossbar spread is 25 inches. Again, you will want to check with the dealership or better yet measure the spread distance with the crossbars in place on the roof of your Durango. The crossbar spread is the distance from the center of the front crossbar to the center of the rear crossbar.
To find a cargo box that you are sure will not interfere with the operation of your rear hatch, you will want to take a measurement from the center of the front crossbar to the seam between your rear hatch and the roof. I have attached a drawing and chart that shows where to measure.
I recommend the Yakima SkyBox 18 Cargo Box, part # Y07336 for your vehicle. It will fit crossbars that have a spread that ranges from 24 inches to 42 inches apart. This cargo box measures 92 inches long by 36 inches wide by 16 inches high, and weighs approximately 52 lbs. It opens from either side and includes 2 Same Key System Locks. The distance needed to clear the rear hatch is 57 inches from the center of the front crossbar to the seam as shown in the drawing.
Another box I recommend is the Yakima RocketBox Pro 14, part # Y07192. This cargo box has the same features as the other, but requires 45 inches of distance from the front crossbar to the seam. This cargo box weighs 38 lbs.
I also recommend the HitchMate TireStep Adjustable Step, part # HE4040. This step easily slips over the tire and provides easier access to the cargo placed on the roof of your vehicle. It has a weight capacity of 400 lbs and folds flat for easy storage. I have attached a link to a product review video for this tire step.
