Question:
Looking for some extra cargo space for a 1000 mile trip. Thinking about a roof top carrier, but not sure how well this would handle 70+ mph interstate speeds.

For your 2008 Buick Lucerne, there are a couple of options you can consider. You can opt for a roof rack that would be versatile enough to handle a variety of carriers, or you can choose to use a cargo bag like part # RL100A20 that will actually sit on the roof of the vehicle. If you choose this option, I recommend a protection pad like part # RL100650. This would provide a barrier between your vehicle roof and the cargo bag and prevent scratches and abrasions.
If you decide on a cargo bag like part # RL100A20, it can ride on the roof of your vehicle without being placed on a roof rack, but would require one of a couple options to secure the bag. You can use clips like part # RL100600 which attach to the door ledges or rain gutters to hold your bag on your naked roof, or you can run the straps through the vehicle interior and around the carrier. I spoke with my contact at Rightline and they told me that although there are no speed limitations on the cargo bag itself, you should make certain that it is properly secured to the vehicle. I would also recommend checking the cargo bag and straps often to make sure they have not become loose and in danger of falling off the car.
I would recommend a roof rack and a cargo carrier. I would recommend the Rhino Rack Vortex Series roof rack. This system consists of 3 part numbers. The 49 inch aerodynamic crossbars, part # RRVA126B-2, reduce drag and wind noise. You will also need the custom clamps and pads, part # DK162, which are designed to fit the door jambs and protect your roof surface from scratches and abrasions. And you will need leg kit # RRRLKVA.

When considering a cargo carrier for the roof of your vehicle you will want to consult your owners manual or your dealership to find the roof weight capacity of your Lucerne. I did some online research but was unable to find the roof weight capacity for your vehicle. After you find what the roof capacity is for your Lucerne, you will need to consider the weight of the cargo carrier combined with the weight of the cargo you are planning on carrying to make certain you do not exceed the maximum roof weight capacity.
