To pick out a weight distribution hitch for your 2008 Volvo XC90 you'll need to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of your towing setup. Based on the capacities of the hitches that fit your vehicle like the Curt part # 13559 a really setup would be the Reese Strait Line part # RP66083 which has a tongue weight range of 400 to 800 lbs and has best sway control at fighting sway before it starts.
For your wiring harness, you will want the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118411. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your Volvo XC90's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, locate the power cable stud on the driver's side. Then connect the fuse holder wire with the ring terminal to the stud. I've attached a video to assist. This is all that is needed for your small utility trailer connection.
If you want to add a 7-way, then you will need the wiring kit # ETBC7 which will have an adapter connector that will have both the 7-way and 4-way trailer connectors. You will connect the 4-way connector listed above and then add the wire, connectors, circuit breakers, and then install the brake controller to get all the 7 functions. I've attached an article and a video to assist.
For a brake controller to make your electric brake output pin on your 7-way to work with your trailer brakes on a trailer with brakes, I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195. It has easy preset options and an LCD screen for easy use.
