Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2004 Toyota Sequoia without Factory 7-Way

Updated 02/03/2025 | Published 12/07/2013

Question:

I would like to purchase part # 20137 for my 2004 toyota sequoia. However, I am having difficulty finding the vehicles wiring harness next to the frame where you said it would be. can you please be more specific with helping me locate the connector, or is there a video which can help?

First, if your 2004 Toyota Sequoia did not come with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector then replacement connector # 20137 is not going to fit. The connection points will not be present to plug it in. If no factory harness is present you will need to hardwire in a 7-Way.

To hardwire in a 7-Way you will need 2 parts, 4-Way flat harness # 46365. Then to add a 7-Way you will need # ETBC7. I have included links that explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

It is odd that your Sequoia did not come with a 7-Way because it looks like they were all supposed to have one. The factory one would have been slightly to the left of the center of the back of the vehicle (drivers side). Its wiring would have been above that location out of sight. If you do a thorough search and it is not there then hardwiring is the only other option.

So I see you know what we'll need.....so I have an 01 seqouia that has a towe package.....but I want a 7way plug and it has a direct plug.....I look at the 7 way plug and it has 2 connectors but if I'm right mine only has 1 which is for the 4 way only....is there a connecting or adapter kit for the 4way to a 7eay or am I going to have to run wires up for the 7way???

@Yue Sounds like you are on the right track. What you will do here is install a 4-flat connector part # C55246 and the # ETBC7 kit. You will have to run wires to the cab for the 7-way. Take a look at these install videos:

@JesseM Ty for the info.....so here's another issue I have.....so my car has a pre installed connector for my seqouia for trailer brake controller.....is there a way I can just splice and connect the wire to my 3040 harness for the trailer controller instead directly splicing into my brake wire itself???

@Yue Our records show the 2001 Sequoia does not have an OEM brake control connector so I am not quite sure what plug you are referring to. You would need to use the # ETBC7 kit, run wires to the cab and hardwire the brake controller.
