Question:

Hello, I’m trying to find cross bars for my 2017 Mazda CX3 that’s compatible with my new Thule Tepui Explorer Ayer 2 - 2 Person Rooftop Tent. I was told Thule doesn’t sell crossbars that make the two compatible so looking at other crossbars that help me mount the tent to my car. Thank you

Thank you for reaching out! For your application we need to look at an alternative to a roof rack on your 2017 Mazda CX-3 because the Thule Tepui Explorer Ayer 2 Rooftop Tent, like the part 901201 in blue, is not supposed to be installed on a roof rack that uses clamps to install on the vehicle. This is because the weight of the tent could damage your roof. Any rooftop tent that I've looked at the instructions for have this same instruction - they are only supposed to be installed on roof that's that connect to a raised rail or fixed point system.

A better way to transport the tent with your vehicle would be with a towable trailer but it is worth noting that the online manual for your 2017 CX-3 says not to tow a trailer with your vehicle so if you choose to do this it will need to be done with careful consideration...otherwise you'll need to use a different vehicle.

If you do choose to tow a trailer to carry the tent on then I recommend installing the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11418, the Curt Wiring # C56300, Ball Mount # C45028, Pin & Clip # F-4, and 2" Hitch Ball # C40018. For a trailer you can use the Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer # MAL53FR.
