Thank you so much for this information this is extremely helpful. By any chance is there a rack that does not have the straight cross bars with exposed ends that would be recommended? I prefer the look where it is rounded off to look more oem.

I checked with Thule and to install the Thule Force XT Sport Rooftop Cargo Box # TH6356B on your 2008 Toyota Highlander with factory crossbars you will need to install an aftermarket roof rack as the factory rack is not listed as a fit with this or any Thule cargo box.
So for an economically priced option that will fit well and will be quieter thanks to it's aerodynamic shape the Malone AirFlow2 part # MPG217 would work great and is a confirmed fit for both your vehicle and the box.
