2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with OEM Crossbars Roof Cargo Basket and Extension Recommendation

Updated 08/08/2013 | Published 08/07/2013

Question:

JUst ordered Mopar OEM Aero Cross bars for my 2012 Jeep Grand Cerokee with factory flush rails. Will the Curt 18115 Roof Mounted Cargo Rack work with those cross bars or do I need something else? What is the best or maximum length I can use. The curt has an extension will it work?

The Curt # C18115 Roof Mounted Cargo Basket will fit crossbars that are up to 3 inches wide. This cargo basket is designed to fit most factory and aftermarket roof racks, but please measure your Aero crossbars to make sure that this cargo basket will work with them. Curt does indicate that the crossbars have to be spaced at least 15 inches apart to mount this basket.

Please make sure that you check your owners manual to verify the roof and crossbar weight capacities. You want to make sure that you do not exceed the lowest rated component of the system.

The extension, # C18117, is an option for you to use with the Curt cargo basket # C18115, this would make the cargo basket 62-1/2 inches long.

Keep in mind that the roof weight limit of your Jeep, either provided by the dealership or as stated in your owners manual, is the total weight that the roof can support. This includes the weight of the cargo basket and the gear included with it. This Curt cargo basket is approximately 40 pounds and the extension is about 15 pounds.

I have included links to the products listed above for your reference. I have also linked a helpful article regarding roof mounted cargo options. Depending on the cargo that you anticipate carrying you might also consider an enclosed cargo box. These will provide protection from the elements and are lockable.
