Troubleshooting 6-Way to 7-Way Wiring on Horse Trailer
Updated 02/17/2022 | Published 02/12/2022 >
Question:
I’m trying to wire up a 7 blade trailer plug to our horse trailer. We have 6 wires brown, black, red, yellow, white, and green. We are trying to determine the wiring diagram and why the electric breaks aren’t working. Any suggestions?

Based on the colors you have it sounds like your 6-way wiring is similar to the Hopkins 6-Way Connector with Jacketed Cable - Trailer End - 8' Long # H20036. In this instance the red wire is going to be your brake power. On a typical 7-way the blue wire would be the brake power/brake controller wire.
Realistically since there is no wiring standard I would recommend tracing your wire back to the brakes or other functions to make sure you have the wires installed correctly on your 7-way connector. Once you know you have the right wire you should find that the brakes work or be able to determine if there is a different issue. If you are still having trouble with your brakes feel free to reach out and I can help you troubleshoot further.
I have attached some different help articles on wiring that cover both 6-way and 7-way wiring.
