Difference Between Class 3 And Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receivers

Updated 06/15/2021 | Published 06/14/2021

Question:

I purchased a F 150 with a max tow package and class 4?hitch. But, the label on the hitch says: bumper tow weight 5000 lbs and Weight distribution weight of 14,000 lbs. A hitch sales place near me said it is a class 3,hitch? What do you think ?

Expert Reply:

Class 3 trailer hitch receivers typically have gross trailer weight of 3,500-8,000lbs with tongue weight of 300-800lbs. Class 4 receivers typically have gross trailer weight of 5,000-12,000lbs with tongue weight of 500-1,200lbs. It is hard to tell for sure which class your receiver is just by looking at the photo you attached. But I wouldn't get too hung up on which class it is, as you will just want to make sure your receiver and truck have a high enough weight rating for your trailer or hitch accessories. I attached a photo that shows the differences between classes.
