Question:
what is the purpose of the felt strips? The glue lets loose in the hot sun, can they be removed and not replaced?

The felt for the BAK tonneau covers part # PARTS-526A0001 is designed to prevent scuffing of the slats of the cover as you roll it up. You can remove yours and leave it off but the cover might develop more scuffs.
