Question:

Hello, I have a 2013 Toyota Tundra SR5 TRD 4x4. I need to install a trailer brake controller. I was looking at the two 90160 Primus IQ and the Tekonsha 90195 P3. What would you recommend? Are there others I should be looking at? I will be pulling a double axle 30 foot toy hauler.

The two Tekonsha brake controllers you mentioned are quality options for your 2013 Toyota Tundra, but between the Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller # TK90160 and the Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195, the one that I highly recommend as the better choice is easily the P3:

- Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195

There are a number of reasons for that but the biggest reason is the ease of use of the P3 compared to the Primus. The display plays a big role in this, as the P3 has a bright, easy-to-read display while the Primus has a simplified display. The P3 uses this display to give you specifics in regards to voltage or even troubleshooting; so if there is an issue with your 7-way wiring, for example, and the controller isn't reading a trailer connected, the P3 will say "No Trailer Connected" while the Primus will display symbols so you'll have to refer back to the owner's manual.

The P3 # 90195 is also more flexible in mounting, as it can be mounted on a 360 degree plane, while the Primus can only be mounted on a 90 degree plane. The P3 also has really convenient storable settings, so if you have different loads when towing you can use whichever setting you like, which is something the Primus doesn't have.

So I think the investment in the P3 is well worth it over the Primus for an easier and more convenient towing experience on a consistent basis. In fact, had you just asked for a recommendation, I would have absolutely gone with the P3. In regards to connecting either, you won't need an adapter unless your 2013 Tundra has the factory 7-way; if it does then this is a plug-and-play option with the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3040-P.

I have added some links below to video reviews for you to check out as well of both the Primus IQ # TK90160 and the Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195.
