I do have a solution for you, however, there are no tailgate assist products that are made specifically for your 2004 Dodge Dakota. Your best bet is to go with Hopkins Truck Bed Tailgate Lift Assist # 74211. This is a universal tailgate assist that uses a torsion bar to take on the weight of your tailgate, thus making the tailgate much easier to raise and lower. You will need to drill a hole in the tailgate and in the bed in order to install this. I have attached a demonstration video for you.
