How does the cable fastener attach the cable to this winch.

The cable fastener, # DL24360, should be inserted into one of the holes in the side of the cable drum on the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, # DL15002.
The packaging for the cable fastener, see attached photo, shows that it should be installed in the slotted hole in the side of the drum, but on the smaller Dutton-Lainson hand winches, DL600A and DL900A, the slot is not large enough for the cable fastener so one of the round holes must be used.
I provided a short video showing how the cable fastener and cable, # DL24043, are installed on the winch you referenced.
