Question:

I have a Fleetwood RV with air brakes. Will the Warner Air Brake controller apply electrical power proportionally to trailer electric brakes or is it a fixed output once initialed regardless of brake foot valve pressure?

The Hayes Air Utility Brake Controller, # HA100400C, is a proportional brake controller. There is a pressure sensor in the unit that sends a certain amount of voltage back to the trailer brakes based on the amount of pressure going through the tow vehicles air brake system.

The unit also has a manual override lever for emergency braking situations. In addition to connecting to the air brake system, there are also 3 wires that will need to be connected. The blue wire will go back to the rear your Sterling Tractor and attach to brake controller circuit of your vehicles trailer connector. The black wire will need to attach to a 12 volt power source. The red wire actuates the stop lights when the controller is operated manually.

You would also need to contact your RV dealer or air brake system manufacturer to get the proper the 3-way tees, tubing, and double check valves needed for the air brake system on your Fleetwood RV.

If you do not have a connector present at the rear of your RV that has an electric brake circuit you will need to check out the link below on how to install a brake controller from scratch. The link details everything you would need to purchase and how to install everything.

Another option for you and easier to install would be to get a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885, if you can find a dedicated stop light switch. This brake controller can sense when you are applying the brakes using internal accelerometers and will apply exactly the amount of braking power that is needed in any given situation, even in reverse.

I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Prodigy brake controller. You will not have to make any connections to your air brake system with the Prodigy brake controller.
