Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox with a Rear Spoiler

Updated 09/17/2012 | Published 09/12/2012

Question:

Will raceway 2 work with my 2005 Equinox with spoiler. I am nervous the plastic spoiler at the the top of the hatch will crack or break where the top cables would attach. Should I be concerned?

I do not recommend using a trunk mounted bike rack on your 2005 Chevrolet Equinox if it has a rear spoiler. The upper straps of the bike rack must attach to the top edge of your rear hatch and the only way to do that is to go over your spoiler. Spoilers are not designed to support the weight of a bike rack or bikes and it is likely that the spoiler will bend and break.

Instead, I recommend using a hitch mounted bike rack like the Thule Doubletrack Pro XT Bike Rack, # TH92BJ. This bike rack is compatible with a 1-1/4 inch or 2 inch trailer hitch receiver.

I recommend using a hitch mounted bike rack because the bike rack will not come in contact with your vehicle and the Vertex bike rack has a tilting feature which allows you to access your rear cargo area without having to remove the bike rack each time.

If you do not have a trailer hitch, then I recommend installing the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # 13591. We have installed this hitch on a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox so I attached the installation video and instructions for you to check out.

Once you have a trailer hitch installed, you will have the ability to tow a trailer if the situation arose. To complete your towing set up, you would just need a wiring harness, # 118391, and a ball mount kit, # 989900.

If you plan on carrying any womens, childrens or alternative bike frames, then I would recommend looking into the Thule Bike Adapter Bar, # TH982XT. Some small or angled bike frames can be difficult to load on a bike rack and this adapter will allow you to load the bikes easily and safely.
