Question:
Is the width of 48 inches the maximum that the rear cross bar extends too? Will it hold 2 standard kayaks?

48 inches is the max width the Darby Extend a Kayak # DTA944-968-924 extends to either side. It pretty easily can carry 2 kayaks like you see in the picture I attached shows.
