The Aries Bull Bar with Removable Skid Plate # AA35-5006 you referenced does indeed require removal of the factory tow hooks (or single piece tow hook bar) on your 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. It uses the existing tow hook mounting points and factory hardware to attach the bull bar brackets. The same is true for all bull bar options for your truck.

Are they usable on a ram 1500? or just the 2500/3500?

Yes, the Tow Hooks for Aries 3" and 4" Bull Bars # AA35-5TOW will work perfectly on your 2005 Ram 1500. I also confirmed this information with my contact at Aries. The fits are based around the Bull Bars and the # AA35-5006 fits 2003-2005 Dodge Ram 1500 as well as the 2500 and 3500. For the newer model years (2006-2018), this fit excludes the 1500, which is why you're only seeing 2500/3500 in the description.
