Wiring a 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector on a 1992 Ford F-250 and F-350

Published 04/06/2012

Question:

I have a 23foot Fiberglass Boat with a EZ load Trailer. The trailer has new surge brakes and has been rewired with a 5 pin Flat Male Connector. When I back up the traier, it seems like the brakes are not releasing. I need a wiring diagram that shows how to wire a the truck for a 5 pin female plug. What type of kit should I buy and can you email me a diagram?

Wiring a 5-way flat connector on your 1992 Ford Truck should be a fairly simple process. You have two options for wiring a 5-way flat connector which are hard wiring a new wiring harness or adding an adapter.

To hard wire a 5-way connector you will want the 5-Flat Vehicle End Wiring Harness, # HM37908. To install this wiring harness, you will cut off your 4-way connector and splice the wires from the 5-way flat into the wires from the 4-way connector color for color. There will be an additional blue wire that needs to be spliced into the reverse light circuit at the tail light assembly using a quick splice, # SWC502905-1. This blue wire will connect to the reverse lockout solenoid on the trailer brake actuator that releases your trailer brakes when backing up.

You can use a circuit tester, # PTW2993, to test for the reverse light circuit on your vehicle.

Another option you have is to purchase the 4 Pole to 5 Pole Adapter, # 20036. This adapter will plug directly into your 4-way connector so you do not have to cut it off and then you can splice the additional blue wire into the reverse light circuit at the tail light with the quick splice that is provided. I have attached a video that shows how to install this adapter. The vehicle in the video is different, but the installation process will be the same.

I have also attached an article that contains a diagram for trailer wiring.
