Ideally, you'd unplug the trailer before backing into the water but you'll be a lot happier in the long run if you'd solder your connections and use heat shrink tubing like part # DW05451 followed by some electrical tape. If you don't solder, you can use heat shrink butt connectors like # DW05744-10 followed up with some electrical tape.
