Question:
I have a check engine code 0174. My mechanic changed intake manifold gasket, EGR and solenoid switch for EGR. Smoke test completed. All systems are closed except the 02 sensors just replaced and the calalytic converter. Can a faulty Cat trigger the 0174 code? What model/ part number of Cat to replace on a Cal vehicle?

The OBD-II fault code 0174 means that the fuel system is operating in a too-lean condition. This means the engine generates more pollutants. The most common causes for this are 1) a plugged fuel filter or weak fuel pump; 2) plugged or dirty fuel injectors; 3) a bad mass airflow sensor (MAF); 4) software that needs to be updated and 5) a vacuum leak (intake manifold gaskets, vacuum hoses, PCV hoses, etc).
The two cat kits we offer for your 1996 Ford Explorer 4.0L V6 are MagnaFlow parts # MF99006HM and # MF23313 and please note that neither of these is legal for use in your state.
The part # MF23311 that you referenced is a fit for the 5.0L V8 engine version of the 1996 Ford Explorer but is not suitable for the 4.0L V6. It is also NOT legal in your state.
