Question:
Aside from the adapter and harness, where is the logical place to mount the Primus 90160 controller? Is there a recommended location to mount the controller and a step by step guide how to mount it? I am considering using Velcro to allow mounting and removal. I would prefer installing it above the switches in a recess on the left side of the steering wheel column. I am not sure how to remove the trim to gain access to the recess for mounting.

I went to the warehouse to measure the Primus and it does not take up as much space as you would think. The Tekonsha Primus part # TK90160 measures:
Width- 3-3/8"
Height- 1-1/4"
Length-4-5/8"
Most customers mount the Primus to the right side of the steering wheel low enough to where it doesn't interfere with driving. It does need to be mounted on a level horizontal plane and be lined up with the direction of travel. Vertically it can be mounted at any angle between 0 and 90 degrees.
If you have a recess you would like to mount it in then you can remove the trim with a trim panel remover part # ALL648544. It is a good idea to remove it carefully because the rivets break easily. I would be sure that the area you are installing it in has enough space. You do need to make sure you can still access the Primus quickly if you need to use the manual override in emergency situations.
I recommend installing it in the center console cubby hole as long as the cubby is deeper than 4 inches. It does not affect the function of the Primus if it sticks out a bit as long as it's level. If the cubby can handle the height and width of the controller then it could be installed in that location. I have attached an installation video that walks you through how to mount it.
