Question:

2017 F-150 4X2 Super Crew 3.5L V6 GTDI I have been working at this for some time now, and still not quite sure what my vehicle can tow. Unfortunately, the GCWR weight nis not printed on any of the vehicle labels in the door. What I do know - Combined weight of Passengers and Cargo, not to exceed 1,645 lbs -GVWR is 6,750 lbs -Wheel Base 145 -3.55 Electronic Lock RR Axle -Axle Code L9 -6750# GVWR Package -Class IV Trailer Hitch w/Smart TRLR Tow Connector -From the Trailer Hitch - reads Max Gross Trailer Weight 11,000 lbs weight distributing -Trailer Sway Control -Fail Safe Cooling System I keep seeing references to Max Tow Package - which it does not appear that I have. That said, I just would like to know what I can pull safely. Would like a 5th wheel option, but I dont think this F-150 would be a good fit for that

Based on the online specs I was able to pull up for the 2017 Ford F-150 it looks like your 4x2 SuperCrew model with the 3.5L GTDI V6 engine and 3.55 axle ratio can pull a 5th wheel trailer that weighs as much as 8,700 pounds at base or up to 10,400 if you have the max trailer tow package.

Since you don't think you have this package you are looking at a 5th wheel towing capacity of 8,700 pounds. Since there are so many variables (as you have seen) I also recommend visiting a local Ford dealer with your VIN. Using this information they should be able to pull up all the factory specs of the truck to provide you with its exact capacities. If nothing else this will set your mind at ease knowing that you have an accurate number to go off of.

You are correct that most half-ton trucks like your F-150 aren't usually the best equipped for towing 5th wheel trailers but there are many light weight options on the market that are designed for this type of application.

If you decide to go this route you will first need to add a base rails to the truck bed, for which I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Kit # RP56034-53. This kit includes custom brackets that will use existing holes in the truck's frame rails so you don't have to drill into them.

Then for the hitch itself I recommend the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ S20 Slider # C95DR if you have the 6-1/2 foot bed or the fixed version # RP30047 if you have the 8 foot bed. This hitch features a 2-jaw locking system to provide a secure and rattle (noise) free connection with the trailer and a 4-Way pivoting head to ease the hookup process.
