The Hopkins Backup Sensor System # HM60100VA that you referenced is designed to wire into the reverse light circuit on your vehicle. This means that the alarm will only sound when backing up the vehicle and not while towing or parked with a trailer attached.
If you are worried about the alarm going on when backing up with a trailer attached, you can pretty easily disable it by mounting the alarm in an accessible location and unplugging the wire leads that connect behind the unit. We have also had customers install a switch like # D16740 on the alarm circuit to toggle it off and on.
