Question:
Specific to aerodynamics, which one would you say is quietest and more streamlined for gas mileage?

Expert Reply:
What creates wind noise is mostly the crossbars on your vehicle and both the Thule Motion XT XL and Yakima ShowCase are highly aerodynamic and streamlined so the best way to choose between these two rooftop cargo boxes is by their respective features.
The Malone Profile18B Rooftop Cargo Box # MPG911, has 18 cubic feet of carrying capacity and fits crossbars that have a spread between 24" and 36". It is a quality cargo box but I recommend going with the Thule Motion XT XL # TH629806 because of how simple it is to use while also being highly secure.
The Motion XT XL cargo box, which has 18 cubic feet of cargo space, opens very easily from either side by pressing the latch, as you can see in the linked video review. It is also going to allow you to know if your box is completely closed due to its red indicator - if you can see it the box is not fully closed; if you can't see the indicator you know the box is closed and ready to be locked to keep your cargo safe.
This box mounts easily with what are called PowerClick clamps, which have a dial on them. All you need to do in order to ensure the Motion XT XL is securely on your rooftop's crossbars is turn that dial and when you hear it click, you know the box is secure on top of your vehicle.
The Thule Motion XT XL # TH629806 is also light, at just 46 lbs, which is 16 lbs lighter than the ShowCase, fits crossbars that have a spread between 23-5/8" and 36-7/8". If your car is something with a rear hatch you can take a measurement to see if you will be able to open that hatch with the Motion XT XL mounted. Just measure from the center of your front crossbar to the seam of your hatch and if it is 51-1/4" or less you will be able to open the hatch.
