Review of the Thule Motion XT Rooftop Cargo Box

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Thule motion XC rooftop cargo boxes. They're available in 16 cubic feet, 18 cubit feet, and 22 cubic feet in either black glossy or titan glossy. With this box, you're going to be able to carry your skis, luggage and snowboard on the outside of your vehicle, and look cool while doing it. All three boxes have a great capacity. You're going to be able to carry three to five snowboards, five to seven pairs of skis, or a combination of luggage, skis and snowboards. With the 16 cubic foot, you're going to be able to carry skis up to 175 centimeters long. With the 18 cubic foot, you're going to be able to carry skis up to 200 centimeters long.

With the 22 cubic foot, you're going to be able to carry skis up to 215 centimeters long. The pull strap makes it super easy to close, and it's lockable so you don't have to worry about your gear going missing when you're grabbing a burrito. It's easy to open, even when you've got your gloves on. There's plenty of room to get in there and slide the latch. One thing I like is you're never going to have to worry about if your box is closed all the way or not. The red indicator goes away when your box is closed all the way.

The key won't come out unless it's properly locked. Now, a lot of the higher end boxes are going to be able to open from either side. This one's no different. Still, it's a great feature to have. With the gear removed, we can check out some of the stuff here on the inside. Now, on your lower end roof boxes, you're going to have a U bolt style clamp that's going to be difficult to operate.

You're not going to want to be taking it on and off. The toy motion uses power click knobs that are easy to operate. When you hear the click, you know it's tight. The coated clamps keep your cross bars looking new. It's got six anchor points, so you can strap down your gear.

Everything is going to arrive in one piece. Now, most roof boxes are made out of plastic. This one's made out of a durable ABS, so it's not as flimsy as some. Some older roof boxes sacrifice aerodynamics and style for size. Thule has incorporated all three. The high gloss finish is going to give you style, and the shape is going to reduce wind noise and drag. All three sizes have a weight capacity of 165 pounds, though you'll want to be sure and check with your vehicle's owner's manual to see if it can carry that much. Customers on our site compare the Thule motion to the Akima Skyboxes. The Thule motion has more of a high profile design, whereas the Akima Skybox has more of a medium profile. Finally, the motion XT is available in silver and black, whereas the sky box is only available in black. Now that we've gone over the features I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. This is going to work with your round, square, arrow, elliptical and most factory roof rack systems. Let's go ahead and set it in place. If you need to get an extra set of hands, go ahead and do so. You'll want to be sure and center it up, and position it so that you can still access your rear hatch. We're all set here. With our box open, let's go ahead and snap our clamps in place. Then we can tighten it down. Check out from underneath. You can see our clamps tightening around our bar. When we hear three clicks, that's how we know it's properly tightened down. Once you've loaded up your luggage and skis, you're going to want to run your included straps. There are three. Then we can just close it up. Then you can lock it up and you're ready to hit the road. That's going to complete our look at the Thule motion XT rooftop cargo boxes.
