Troubleshooting Factory 7-Way on 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Updated 09/05/2018 | Published 09/04/2018

Question:

I have a08 4Runner and the factory 7 way plug has no power going to it. I purchased a trailer hitch tow bar from you and trailer lights worked fine now no power to the plug. I checked fuses and they were fine and the trailer lights worked on a different vehicle. Is there a module in this vehicle? Thanks

I looked up your owners manual for your 2008 Toyota 4Runner and you will want to check fuse location 51 for the 12V function, location 52 for the trailer tail lights, and location number 49 for brake controller. You will also want to check fuse location 57 and fuse 27. There is a towing converter module that is on fuse 27.

You will want to check your paper manual to make sure it lines up with the suggestions above from the online manual for your vehicle.

If all of the fuses are good (as you mentioned checking some) then you will want to check for damaged wires behind the connector, frayed wires or missing insulation, or use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the internal wiring for a short every few feet. Finally, you can choose to bypass it altogether using # 119178KIT and the # ETBC7 kit.
