Trailer Brakes Will Not Release After Brake Controller Install on a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche

Question:

Hi, I have a 2008 avalanche lt. I found the wiring harness. Dark blue says aux, red/black says per, light blue says chmsl and white is ground. When hooked to my controller I have power to my brakes all the time. It seems nothing is activated by the brake switch. Also power from the distribution box doesnt work so I have it hooked to the battery. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks,

It sounds like you are trying to install a brake controller like the Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller part # HM47294 on your 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche using the blunt cut wires under the dash. If that is the case then the wires need to be attached as follows but it will also be necessary to test them with a circuit tester:

- Dark Blue Wire on Vehicle to Black Wire on Brake Controller
- Red/Black Wire on Vehicle to Blue Wire on Brake Controller
- Light Blue Wire on Vehicle to Red Wire on Brake Controller
- White Wire on Vehicle to White Wire on Brake Controller

If you have the brake controller installed using the above connections then chances are there is a short in the brake output wire that runs from the brake controller to each braking assembly. I would pay special attention to the join at the trailer connectors but other than that you would need to trace the wire all the way back or run a new one with part # 10-1-1.
