Sounds like the ground wire is your issue. But first did you check to make sure there's a good fuse in the fuse holder of the # 118552? It's pretty easy to forget that.

But for the ground strap you need to have it connected to a metal surface that comes into contact with the vehicle frame in order for it to ground properly. I am not exactly sure where you have it now but it sounds like it's not attached to a metal surface.

My issue is power. I could not find a good ground so I temporary ran a ground to the negative terminal on the battery. Now I get power with my test light at hethe back of teh drivers side lite, but nothing with I try to test the trailer connector

If the light comes on when you have the negative wire connected to the battery instead of where you had it ran previously then it is a ground problem like we previously mentioned.
