What Does a Weight Distribution System Do

Updated 07/17/2018 | Published 07/15/2018

Question:

Is the goal to only bring the front end back to the original ride height with a WD hitch? I though the point was to add weight to both front and rear equally? If thats the case why does every setup instruction say to have the same measurement or slightly higher?

The goal of a weight distribution system is to more evenly distribute the trailer tongue weight to all axles of the tow vehicle and trailer. You also want the rig to be level. Ride hide after a trailer is coupled and the weight distribution spring bars are engaged is an indicator if the system is set up properly.

If it isn't then you are not getting the full benefit of the system. The easiest way to measure that is to compare the ride height at the front and rear wheel wells with and without everything set up.

In addition to helping with rear end sag the weight distribution system will make steering and braking better in the tow vehicle that it would be if you weren't using weight distribution. It also maximizes the capacity of a trailer hitch that is rated for weight distribution.

So weight distribution is doing several things to help you have the best and safest towing experience you can. I have included some links on weight distribution for you.
