Using Sway Control with Curt Trailer Hitch # 13412 on a 1981 Jeep CJ-7

Updated 05/31/2018 | Published 05/30/2018

Question:

I see this hitch is not rated for Weight Distribution. Is it safe to use a WD system as long as the rated capacity is not otherwise exceeded? Is there something in the hitch design that doesnt allow for using WD? I would be towing 2000 lbs trailer with 225 to 230 lbs of tongue weight, so I shouldnt have a problem with weight. I primarily would like the WD system for added stability and anti sway. Thanks.

Weight distribution puts a lot of additional stress on a trailer hitch which is why the hitch has to be designed, tested, and rated for use with weight distribution. Curt trailer hitch # 13412 does not meet the criteria so you cannot use weight distribution with it on your 1981 Jeep CJ-7.

You can still use an anti-sway device though. You would just need to use sway control bracket # RP26003 and then a friction sway control bar, # 83660. I have linked a video that features both of these products for you.
