What is Needed to Add a Third LED Brake Light to a Trailer

Updated 03/17/2018 | Published 03/16/2018

Question:

I have a 7x12 utility trailer with a loading gate on the back. I am running all LED lights and would like to add an led third brake light to the gate. I only would like it to work as a brake light not as turn and brake. I have read some of your help articles on this and am getting confused. Any suggestions?

Since your trailer's brake and turn signals are likely on the same circuit you need to split them in order to have a third brake light function only as a brake light and not flash with the turn signals. Since you have LED light use the Curt Converter, part # C56196.

Basically what you need to do is tap into your right brake/turn signal wire and connect it to the green wire on the input side of # C56196. Then tap into the left side and connect it to the yellow wire on the converter input side. Ground the white wire to the trailer's frame. On the output side you can cap off both the yellow and green wires, but the red wire connects to the new third brake light.

Take a look at the diagram I've attached.
