Question:
Thanks for getting back to me so quick. In looking at your suggested items the conversion plug from 4 to 7 pin looks exactly like the one I have.

In order to activate the brakes on your trailer with your 1996 Jeep Cherokee you would need to install a 4-way trailer connector, 4 to 7-way trailer connector, and a brake controller. The 4 to 7-way converter your trailer came with would not allow the vehicle to activate all functions of the trailer.
For a 4-way trailer connector, I recommend the Upgraded Circuit Protected Tail Light Converter part # 119178KIT. Then for a 4 to 7-way trailer connector, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit part # ETBC7 which also comes with the wiring you will need to install a brake controller. For brake controller I recommend the Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller part # HM47295 which is an excellent cost effective option for you.
I have attached a review video of both the controller and install kit for you as well.
