Tekonsha Prodigy Electronic Brake Cable Replacement for Damaged One Dragging on Road

Updated 08/28/2024 | Published 02/07/2018

Question:

I have a new RV with a Prodigy TK94FR brake control unit. On our first trip out, the cable to the auxillary power port on the vehicle came loose and fell to where it was brushing the road as we drove. The cable was abraded in half before we realized it at our next stop. Can this cable be replaced by the user? Or the factory? It is possible that I could put a new connector plug on the severed end since only about 2 feet of the cable was severed but I would rather have a new cable.

Easiest solution we can offer for replacing the 7-way and lead of your Prodigy RF part # TK94FR is to hardwire in the part # H20042 in place of the one you lost.

Or you could even cut the loom on both side of what you have, strip back the wiring, and then butt end connect all of the connections. For a set of ten butt connectors you'd then want the part # DW05745-10.

I had the same thing happen... I am not sure how easy it is to change this cable on the trailer end and I don't want to make my situation worse. Are there published instructions to change the cable?

@Shifty Have you done any wiring in the past? It's really just a matter of stripping the wires back and then using butt connectors or solder to attach the new wires.

@JamesonC No, I haven't. And my bigger concern is that the connection is inside the brake controller itself and it's not at all obvious how to open it or get to them. The controller appears to be sealed. Holding for close to 40 minutes with Tekonsha, one of the things I want to ask them is why this isn't just a seven-pin fitting like it is on the other side.

@Shifty Last we had checked there isn't a replacement 7-way male harness that the Prodigy RF has that you can replace it with. We are only aware of solution that requires cutting off the old harness and splicing in a new one but I am curious to hear what Tekonsha says if you end up waiting out their hold line.
