Installation Instructions for a Shorter Boat Trailer Fold Away Coupler Hinge Kit

Updated 06/20/2011 | Published 06/16/2011

Question:

I have a boat trailer that has a fold away tongue. The folding section is about 33 inches long. Can I get a shorter fold away section. I am trying to get under my states length requirements for towing. Thank you.

The length of the fold away can be shortened in most circumstances. If you have a 3 x 5 inch trailer tongue then the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit, item # FHDPB350101, can be used and the extension out front can be cut to any length shorter than the maximum pivot length listed in the chart I have linked.

As an example, this means that if your gross trailer weight, loaded and ready to tow, is 7,500 pounds and the tongue weight is 750 pounds, your pivot length can be 27 inches (maximum) or any length shorter than that, that will suit your application. You will need to cut the portion of the tongue, that extends forward of the spot you install the hinge kit at, to the length needed.

The gross weight of your boat and tongue weight should be determined to be sure the extension is not too long, causing issues with torque on the hinge.
