Troubleshooting Hopkins Engager Break Away Kit That Wont Recharge Battery
Question:
Good morning, We need some help...we installed the Hopkins Engager brake away system last night on my husbands Chevy Silverado 2007 Classic Diesel 2500HD V8 400 6.6L F.I. H.O. Turbo diesel. The wheels brakes perfectly last night and all lights illuminated on the trailer perfectly. Unfortunately, this morning, the red recharge Light comes on when we press the test button while we had the truck turned on. The lights still come on on the trailer and the brake away system is still engaging. Any thoughts on why the battery is not regcharing? The yellow recharging light is NOT on while the truck is running even though the lights are on the trailer and the breakaway intakes are working. Thank you ??

The Engager Trailer BreakAway Kit with Charger and Tester # 20099 will charge if the black wire from the breakaway box is receiving 12 volts from the 7-way on your tow vehicle.
You will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test this wire for 12 volts when the vehicle is connected and running. If there is no voltage there then you will need to trace this wire back to where it connects to your vehicle wiring and make sure it is connected securely to the 12 volt circuit of your trailer wiring. There may be a blown fuse, so check your owners manual for possible locations to test.
You also will need to check that the white ground wire of the box is connected to a clean surface on your trailer frame or to the common ground wire of the trailer's wiring.
It may be if this is a new battery that you need to give it an initial charge to allow it to then function properly.
