Updated 06/29/2017 | Published 06/28/2017

Question:

2008 Tioga Rv on Ford 450 chassis towing 2009 Jeep wrangler 2-door. Towing system installed by rv dealer: Blue Ox tow system with BrakeBuddy. Breakaway switch now frozen. Plan to replace with Hopkins HM20010. Need to know how to identify brake and battery wires from old breakaway switch to match with Hopkins blue and black wires.

Expert Reply:

The Blue wire on the Hopkins Replacement Break-Away Switch # HM20010 will need to be spliced to the wire that sends the signal for the braking on your Jeep. The Black wire will need to be connected to your BrakeBuddy.

I recommend using Heat Shrink Butt Connectors # DW05745-5 to make your splice and connection. You will also want to secure those connection points using Deka Self-Fusing Auto Tape # DW04367. Both of these used together will do an excellent job at protecting these points against the elements.
