Will Going to a Higher Load Range Trailer Tire Prevent Blow Outs on a Boat Trailer
Updated 06/21/2017 | Published 06/20/2017 >
Question:
I have been using 215/75r14 tires and the load range is C I have had two blow out in the past four years. tire pressure 45lb. Ive also had them balanced making sure they use the lug holes to balance. would increasing the load range to this tire D improve my ride etc . Plus the safety of the tire not blowing out. both times the outer side wall was completely shredded. These are on a single axle trailer boat weight about 3-3200 lbs. Steel rims with holes I think they call them modular? rim was dented this time so Im replacing both. any ideas or suggestions?

An ST205/75-14 load range C trailer tire should be inflated to 50 psi. But even at 45 psi you still should be good. The tires have a capacity of 1,870 pounds at 50 psi; slightly less at 45 psi, so it doesn't seem like a capacity issue.
Going to a load range D in the same size will give you a stronger tire (more plies/higher ply rating) and they will hold up better than the load range C. But make sure you inflate the load range D tires to 65 psi. You will also want to replace both tires so you don't have 2 different capacities on the trailer which can lead to other problems.
Tire and wheel combo # A21514RTM45SM is exactly what you need to replace the tire and wheel on the side with the damaged wheel. If you want to keep the wheel on the other side then the tire by itself is # TTWTRTM2157514D.
