Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 8,000 lb Trailer

Updated 04/25/2017 | Published 04/24/2017

Question:

Hello, Im looking to purchase a weight distribution hitch for my new truck but am a little confused on what I need. Im pulling an 8000 lb camper. When the camper is level I measure 18.5inch from the ground to the top of the coupler. My tow vehicle measures 22inch from the top of the 2inch receiver to the ground. the receiver is a 2.5inch but I have the factory reducer to 2inch in Im leaning towards a system that doesnt use chains and has sway control built in. any help is appreciated. Thanks,

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

For an 8,000 lb trailer your tongue weight is going to be between 800 and 1,200 lbs so I would recommend the Reese Strait Line part # RP66084 which has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs and features only sway control system designed to fight sway before it starts.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
