Brake controllers are not vehicle fit specific, so yes, they interchange. I confess to having a favorite brake controller and it is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that has an LCD screen. It is so easy to understand and see what you need in real time. I'm not a fan of all the codes as it is constantly confusing people, and this controller avoids that. It is customizable to your driving preferences and has 3 levels of boost.
For your 2007 Ford Ranger, you will also need a 4 way connector if you don't already have one. I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM40655. Once you have a 4-way, you will need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 which includes the wire, connectors, and circuit breakers you need.
If you don't already have a hitch receiver, I recommend the # 75082 and the ball mount # C45900.
