Recommended Hitch Mount Bike Rack for 2011 Honda Insight

Updated 02/07/2017 | Published 02/06/2017

Question:

Hi - What a great, informative website!! I’m interested in purchasing a bike rack and, if necessary, a 1 1/4” trailer hitch for my 2011 Honda Insight. Because I’ll be using it on camping trips where I need easy access to the rear hatch door, a trunk mount rack like the Thule TH910XT isn’t really an option. I was thinking of something like the Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack and Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4” But then I saw this notice: Note: All non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. Is there somewhere on your website that shows what these stabilizing straps are, and what they look like? I’m only going to be carrying one bike. Is there an alternative rack you would recommend? Thanks!

The trailer hitch receiver we have to fit your 2011 Honda Insight is the Curt # C11051. Curt does require using a support strap when you're using a bike rack with this hitch. The strap is # 18050. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what rack you're carrying the strap is still required.

The Swagman XC # S64650 is a great choice for a rack. It's extremely popular and has great reviews. The only thing I would suggest you consider is a folding rack. This way you would be able to access the rear of your vehicle with the bike loaded. The Swagman Chinook # S64683 will is a great option. The Chinook also features locks to secure the bike to the rack and the rack to your Honda. The XC does not include locks but a locking hitch pin can be added, # S64029.
