Recommended Weight Distribution System For Rockwood TT Trailer

Published 02/06/2017

Question:

What is the major difference between the Reese you recommended and the Curt C17501 other than the brake pads? I have ordered the trailer and don't know the frame dimensions it is a Rockwood Signature Ultralite. I assume both will fit.

The Curt Spring Bars # C17117 will not be compatible with your Draw-Tite (Reese or Pro Series) weight distribution system. I recommend you get a new system to meet the weight of your new trailer as well as help you reduce sway.

When choosing a weight distribution system, you want to calculate the total tongue weight. Total tongue weight is the trailer tongue weight when completely loaded along with any weight behind the rear axle of your 2016 Ram 2500.

For your application, I recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion # RP66561. This system will have a capacity for total tongue weight ranging from 700-1400 lbs. This system will help control sway with hot rolled spring bars and automotive grade friction pads very similar to vehicle brake pads. The shank is adjustable to meet your trailer and vehicle needs.

You will need a hitch ball for this assembly like # C40030 for a 2-5/16 inch option or # A-90 for a 2 inch option.

The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 15,000 lbs GTW, 1,500 lbs TW, # C17501, you asked about is a nice system. This system will fit a trailer frame up to 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide. One of the nicest features is the built in grease zerks in the trunnion bars for simple maintenance. It simply uses a different method of friction sway control. The Curt system uses metal on metal friction in the bars, but uses a spring-loaded ball bearing in the head with shaped receivers built in. The pads in the Reese # RP66561 give you a quieter ride avoiding the metal on metal friction on the bars, but use metal on metal friction in the head assembly. The Reese system will fit frames up to 6 inches tall and up to 2-1/2 inches wide. The design controls the sway better, but I get that some people don't like seeing the wear on their system and some like to see it clearly so they can manage the system. Both are very good systems, so it comes down to preferences. The Reese uses no grease an may need pads replaced at some point, the Curt uses grease and may need springs replaced at some point. Either is a great option for your Rockwood Signature Ultralite.
