Question:

On a 2004 Tahoe with boat trailer , I have lost the trailer running lights. Brake and turn signals work OK. Running lights did work originally. I tested the plug on the Tahoe and found no power between running lights spade and ground. No obvious loose or damaged wire. Is there a fuse?

On your 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, since you aren't getting power to the trailer connector running lights, it is most likely a blown fuse. The fuse you will want to check first is the TRL PARK fuse which is located in the fuse box under the hood of your Tahoe. This is the fuse for your trailer running lights.

If you want to check all your other fuses for the trailer and tow package, I'll give you that list. According to the owners manual for your vehicle, they are found in three different locations. Since you'll already be in the under the hood fuse box, check STUD 2 fuse--accessory power/trailer wiring brake feed.

Next, let's move to the fuse block behind the access door on the driver's side edge of the instrument panel. I'd suggest checking the following fuses:

VEH CHMSL--vehicle and trailer high mounted stop lamp
LT TRLR ST/TRN--left turn signal/stop trailer
RT TRLR ST/TRN--right turn signal/stop trailer

Lastly, the Center Instrument Panel Fuse Block located underneath the instrument panel, to the left of your steering column, there is a TRAILER fuse--trailer brake wire.

If there is not a circuit short due to a blown fuse, the culprit could be corrosion at your trailer connector. I suggest using a wire brush like # DW00254 to clean every terminal in the trailer connector or if it is too corroded, just replace the trailer connector with # 74682. If a fuse is blown, this can also prevent further issues and can be done prior to replacing the fuse.
