Question:
I need a surface mount led light to replace the license plate light it is replacing which is mounted above the license facing down towards the license. Will this light work for that purpose or do I need to be looking at a different model. It will be used on a 2003 Holiday Rambler presidential 5th wheel which is currently equipped with a Trucklite 544 incandescent assy that is recessed. So I am looking for a surface mount that will cover the hole which is approximately 2.5inch x 7/8

You said your license plate mount bracket is recessed so as long as the light part # UCL13C2PG can be mounted pointing down towards the plate it would work well for you. If you were to mount it on the same vertical wall as where the license plate is the light would be directed towards the back of the trailer and would not work well.
If you need something to mount directly over the plate you would need the part # LPL31CB.
