Smaller Kuat Hitch Pin for 2 Inch Bike Racks

Published 07/07/2016

Question:

My bike rack has a regular 5/8 inch hole and this pin rattles around in my hitch. It says it is for 2 inch bike racks. Is that the case?

It seems odd, but the reason Kuat recommends using their 1/2 inch pin, # HL2, with their 2 inch bike racks is because a larger pin will interfere with the anti-rattle system in the bike rack's shank.

To eliminate the movement of the pin, you can pull the rack backwards before tightening the anti-rattle system, while the hitch pin is installed, then tighten the anti-rattle knob down. This will sandwich that pin between the rack and the hitch keeping it from rattling around.

The anti-rattle cam will keep the bike rack from moving in the hitch and the pin is more of a safety measure if the anti-rattle cam failed or wasn't tightened enough.
