Wiring a Prodigy P2 Brake Controller on a 2009 GMC Sierra

Updated 07/06/2026 | Published 09/19/2010

Question:

I thought that this would be...connect like colored wires and...voila...done! The 2009 Sierra wiring harness has a white and dark blue GRN and AUX...but thats where the similarities end...there are 3 more wires in this bundle of stubbed wires...a red with black stripe labelled BATT and 2 others...light blue with white stripe and solid orange...both labelled CHSML. If I were to guess...I would guess that either one between the orange and the light blue would work...but Im confused and would appreciated some feedback.

You are correct the GM wire colors do not match the standard brake controller wiring colors.

You will want to connect the wiring as follows from your Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller - Proportional part # 90885

Connect the RED WITH BLACK STRIPE wire from the GM harness to the BLACK wire on the brake controller.
Connect the WHITE wire from the GM bundle to the white wire of the WHITE wire of the brake controller.
Connect the LIGHT BLUE/ WHITE wire of the GM bundle to the RED wire of the brake controller.
Connect the DARK BLUE wire from the GM bundle to the BLUE wire of the brake controller.
The orange GM wire is not used on the brake controller so you can tie it up out of the way.

There are two wires under the hood that have to be connected in order to make the towing package functional, one of the wires is the power wire to the brake control and the other is the battery charge line run to the Pollak Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the 2009 GMC Pickup, Sierra part # PK11916, that you may need to install. These wires are both Red/Black with eyelets on them. They are coiled up under the hood and will need to be connected to the under hood fuse box. One of the wires is located between the under hood fuse box and the driver side fender. The other is located under the master cylinder/brake booster assembly. See attached pic for more clarification if needed.

Someone may find this info useful. My 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 DENALI with Z82 HD Trailering Equip PKG had the bundle of blunt cut wires under the dash. It had a label which eventually fell off. But I have it in front of me. The label for the factory blunt cut wires is labelled exactly as: - DK BLUE - AUX - RED/BLACK - BATT - LT BLUE/WHT - CHMSL - ORG - CHSML - WHITE - GND CHMSL and CHSML are both nomenclature for "Center High Mounted Stop Lamp". Lt Blue/WHT is the cold side of the brake pedal switch. It only receives power when your foot physically presses down the brake pedal. That's why it's used on the brake controller. Orange is the dedicated center high mounted stop lamp power circuit. (same signal as the 3rd stoplight that is mounted at the top rear of the truck cab.) It is used typically to power a 3rd brake light on a camper shell, topper, or canopy. It provides a clean, fused, 12-volt brake light signal that is entirely independent of the turn signals. (The taillightscombine the brake and turn signals onto a a single wire which will flash.) It isn't typically used with brake controllers. If you are not sure if you have the towing package, look for that Z82 code on the label that is found in your glove box. There should be two labels - one has the VIN and Truck Camper Load Information, the other is a Service Parts Identification tag that is useful when ordering parts for all sorts of repairs. Codes are alphabetical, and you'll find that Z82 down near the end (since it starts with Z.) The connections described by the "expert" above are correct for wiring your brake controller.
